    WANT ONE!

The wheelchair pimped out with an Xbox, I mean... not the ruptured appendix...
If it was a 360 that is. If it was an original Xbox, well you can just keep your mint green wheelchair, thanks!

What does a fella have to do to get one of these things? I'd never have to walk again... I don't sound callous, do I?

Sticks and stones may break my bones...

Delta Blues - Gears of War 2 ViDoc 3 Goes Live
With just over a month to go until Gears 2 slices through your life like a Lancer through hot Locust, Epic has just released the latest ViDoc for the game. Called Delta Blues, it's a closer look at the characters who make up Delta Squad. You can see it now on www.GearsofWar.com, or head to Xbox LIVE Marketplace to download it for yourself.

    Deets:

“Delta Blues” provides an inside look at the members of Delta Squad from those who know them best. In this vidoc, find out what it means to never fight alone as Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski, senior producer Rod Fergusson and president Mike Capps discuss the iconic characters who comprise Delta Squad, as well as the new characters introduced in “Gears of War 2.”

Stay tuned for more vidocs as we approach the worldwide launch of “Gears of War 2” on 7th November, exclusively on Xbox 360. For more information about “Gears of War 2,” visit www.gearsofwar.com."

Is it just me or does this ViDoc remind anyone else of that old 'Wlaking in Memphis' song?

Study Shows 3% Of American Youth Live Worst Lives Ever

Here's The -Minus World's take on the recent Pew released "Teens, Video Game & Civics" study on the role of games in the lives of modern American youth.

Gamers not fat loners, say researchers

Despite the negative comments in the comments of this article claiming this study has been poorly researched and despite the even more damning evidence of me in fact being a "pale, overweight couch potato" I breath a huge sigh of relief that I am apparently "fit, physically if not mentally"...

Prelude Proves Portal Is Still Alive

What the heck is this and why isn't it on Live for downloading at 800 M$ points NOW!?!?

I gave up PC games a long time ago because I just wanted something I could stick in and get stuck in to.

Portal is a cracking puzzle AND action game that affects the player in ways I can't even understand myself. When I finally booted it up from the Orange Box at about two in the morning after a Gears session I played it straight for six hours... SIX HOURS. I took a short break for brekkie and then got stuck in again for another couple of hours. Could. Not. Stop.

I want more Portal on the 360 soon please, Valve.

    Gears of War 2 updates...

Arguably my favourite game....ever. Solely on the basis that since I bought it with my Xbox360 almost two years ago I have played it online almost every week since then... that's gotta count for summink.

Dreaming and Doing: How Virtual Worlds Inspire People With Disabilities

A feel good story... I think.

I was watching the paraolympics the other day (and I admit it's only because there was nothing else on the box) and I was struck by a strange and unwelcome notion: is it right or wrong for "differently abled" people to aspire to be normal? (please note the italics, I am strongly against generalisation and all forms of disrcimination, even positive, based on prejudice)

In the article linked disabled people are claiming it's great to see their avatars in action, dancing for example, because it in turn gives them some kind of feeling of movement... isn't that an admission that they would rather not be disabled and is saying THAT an admission that being disabled is somehow "wrong" or "faulty"?
This is a dangerous post and I am definitely not out to offend anyone. I'm putting my thoughts up for discussion and would very much like some open and honest feedback about what other people think and about what other people think about what I think... (work THAT out!)

Are disabled people just people who happen to be disabled or are they disabled-people? Should they be treated differently or should they be expected to cope and act like everyone else? I like to think I've treated people with disabilities in pretty much the same way I treat everyone else but with the exception that I don't ask them impossible things in the same way I don't ask my six year old son to drive down to the shops.

This post has been a bit of a rant and I'm nowhere near finished thinking it all out for myself...

New Study on Teens, Video Games & Civics is Mostly Good News

    http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/09/16/new-study-teens-video-games-amp-civics-mostly-good-news

Marvel at the astounding revelations in this report, such as:
The most popular games played by teens today span a variety of genres and ratings (well, duh!)
The most popular game genres include games with violent and nonviolent content (what about the other ones, games without violent OR non-violent content....er, I'm getting a headache...)
Teens encounter both pro-social and anti-social behaviour while gaming (the anti-social behaviour probably comes from all those teens that play videogames)

"While racing, puzzle and sports games were determined to be the most popular, Pew found that two-thirds of American teens enjoyed action and adventure games, which may contain violent elements. A listing of teens' Top 10 most popular games was headed by Guitar Hero, Halo 3 and Madden."
Guitar Hero isn't a racing, puzzle or sports game. Halo 3 isn't a racing puzzle or sports game, Madden isn't a racing, puzzle or... well, alright it's a sports game. But how can you say that racing , puzzle and sports games are the most popular and list those three as heading the top ten?

I like that only 13% of parents said that games had a harmful effect on their kids. I wonder what they'd say if you asked them what affect videogames had on OTHER PEOPLES kids?

Jokes aside I love statistics and I love reports like this that prove that adults and parents just like me are really responsible people with upstanding values who take an active role in teaching their kids the difference between right and wrong. As soon as I get into work tomorrow I'm going to use the company's computer to download the report and then I'm going to use their printers to print it out on their paper. I'll probably steal a paperclip too to keep the 75 pages together.

Castle Crashers Hits 250k Players, Fixes Coming

I downloaded the demo for Caste Crashers by mistake. Someone had turned on Automatic Downloads and a little green message popped up one day telling me it was ready to play... so I gave it a go. I'm glad I did.

Although I'm generally against button bashing games veering as I do more towards games with a cerebral bent (like GOW and Lego Indiana Jones...) I like the cartoonishness of this one. It's basically Golden Axe in gameplay, just even more fun than playing as the scantily clad female barbarian.

I haven't bought the full game yet, I heard something about the multipayer not working properly?

    Boot Camp

    http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/86281-Editors-Note-Boot-Camp

Each week The Escapist web magazine publishes a series of themed articles. This week it's all about video games and warfare. How have videogames been affected by the art of warfare, and why? How will videogame technology be capitalised by warmongers? Interesting reads if you have the time.

The Force is strong in this one

No sooner have I left a comment on Torment's site about how The Force Unleashed could be bought simply on the strength of the demo than MTV Multiplayer comes up with this article claiming how the full game has a completely different feel.... oops. Buying it I still will be, though.

‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’ Game Doesn’t Play Like Its Demo

The Duke is on his way...

Kotakue: Duke Nukem Hits XBLA on Sept. 24 [Duke Nukem 3d]
Eurogamer: News: Duke Nukem 3D dated for XBLA (Xbox 360)
GamesRadar, N4G: Duke Nukem 3D XBLA Dated: September 24 (Duke Nukem 3D - Xbox Live Arcade)
360Fanboy: Duke Nukem kicks the XBLA's a** and chews bubble gum on Sept 24th

This seems to be as big a deal for others as it is for me. I probably have Duke Nukem to thank for being the gamer I am today. I bought my first PC as soon as I could afford it myself... and it was the cheapest I could find! A Fujitsu Siemens PC-TV that I bought on a hire purchase agreement with Radio Rentals. It was a hybrid between a computer and a built in tv... and because of this identity crisis couldn't pull off either function very well. It had been named Percy Tovey and had a cute on screen interface that looked like a kids bedroom where you could open a cupboard to find your installed games, click on a computer screen to access the real computer underneath, press a remote control to get the TV on...

I stripped this innocent down, added memory, new drives, upgraded to Win 95 (upgraded !), tweaked, jimmied, yanked, pulled, sweet talked, threatened and cried over this machine for hours and hours... and for what? For the sole purpose of being able to play Duke Nukem 3D. Duke taught me everything I know about computers... I even created my own level which has been lost to the mists of time and borrowed a computer from work (which I wheeled home on a sack trolley, screen and all) so I could set up a serial link between the two machines and play deathmatches.

    Oh happy days...

Morrisons move to start a "bloody war" in UK retail

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/morrisons-move-to-start-a-bloody-war-in-uk-retail

Have no idea who Morrisons are actually, they didn't exist when I lived in the UK, but I applaud any reduction in the price of games.

But a "bloody war"...? Is this the beginning of corporate reign and umbrella companies employing private armies to wage violent battles in the urban streets of our major cities against their commerical opponents? Hope so, I'll put a fiver on Tescos beating the crap out of Sainsburys.

Only One Man Can Save Us From The Large Hadron Collider

Aparently the world didn't end yesterday. At least not that I noticed. But then again they only shot a couple of particles around the Large Hadron Collider to test it out. The real colliding doesn't start for another couple of weeks...

But lol at the note in the linked article. LOL.

Bizarre Anti-Spore Website Takes Issue WIth Stance On Creationism

As a Humanist I have the double standards problem of having to respect humans, (in principle anyway!), while not really having any respect for religion or scripture (that's a huge oversimplification, google "Humanism" if your actually interested) so on the surface I think Spore is just a bit of fun, the ultimate "sim" as someone coined it.
Not everyone thinks so. This article links to an Anti Spore site from an organisation that thinks we shouldn't play at being gods. Or God. Or even goddeses.
Stuart Houghton's point about the player actually becoming an "ultimate being" thus strengthening the concept of ultimate beings in general is an interesting one.
